Pre-KG Out and About - Discovering Rokko Island

Pre-KG

Out and About - Discovering Rokko Island

The Pre-Kindergarten children enjoy their push cars and the sandbox in the backyard of the school, but as they have gotten quite responsible in walking in pairs and are becoming increasingly curious about the world around them, we have taken the children on short walks in the vicinity of the school.

So in recent weeks the Pre-KG children went on a tsunami drill walk, rolled on the green hill near the Sheraton hotel, rode on bouncy animals, slid down a big slide at a fun playground and danced on the wood deck near the green field!

This week on Wednesday we also walked to the nearby field where the school used to plant tulips to check out the vegetables and flowers growing there. The Pre-KG children and teachers were very impressed with the eggplants growing on bushes!

There are so many things to see, do and discover and the children learn while honing their observation, gross motor and communication skills !

Pre-KG The Shapes Fairy and the Scarecrow project

Pre-KG

The Shapes Fairy and the Scarecrow project

For meaningful learning at DSKi we try to connect our learning to the outside world and wider community.

So the classroom teacher Anita U.Mönch, who has been a longtime member of the NPO Peace and Nature (P&N), an organisation that leads and supports environmental projects, made the contact between the school and P&N some years ago and our Kindergarten children have been enjoying various excursions and hands on activities at their farm in the past.

In August P&N offered an international scarecrow contest, in which we could not participate due to a tight schedule, but the Pre-KG children decided to put their knowledge to good use and make their own scarecrow with colourful shapes based on the little fairy design by Eimi.

The project started with looking at the design, then their teacher cut the relevant shapes out of recycled cardboard. The Pre-KG children had a lot of fun painting them using big shaving brushes. They displayed a lot of patience and skill!

On a different day the children assembled all the shapes and were very proud of the result !

A big thumbs up to such great team work and a very charming scarecrow which we will display at the school for a while before donating it to Peace and Nature in the future !

Kindergarten 25 Sep. 2020

The Blue Team did a small experiment this week.  They colored coffee paper with food coloring. Everybody was excited about what was happening!  We dried the coffee paper overnight and used them as autumn leaves on the tree the next day.

The Yellow Team spent a lot of time outdoors enjoying the nice weather. We looked at the different kinds of flowers in the garden across from the Green Field. We also went on a scavenger hunt for birds, but found dogs instead! We have been making a lot of artwork at school recently for our "How We Express Ourselves Unit," and maybe that's why the children discovered they could draw pictures on their mats after nap time with wet wipes!

Kindergarten 18 Sept. 2020

Last Tuesday was very nice weather, so the Blue Team decided to eat a snack outside. This week the Blue Team was focusing on shapes. Children made a collage together and they also made individual collages.

This week, the Yellow Team made art using black scratch boards and stencils, which was a new medium for them. They also made "marble art" by rolling marbles covered in paint across a tray.

Pre-KG Shapes galore !

Pre-KG

Shapes galore !

More often than not, children just need to be given the right opportunities and the right tools to show how creative they are.

So, with A LOT of shapes to play with, the Pre-KG children continued their learning about shapes and colours and discovered along the way that you can do many fun things with them !

We played a recognition game, did a search around our Rainbow classroom and saw cars, busses, robots, houses, snowmen and a tiny little fairy made all out of colourful shapes!

The creator, Eimi, was very keen to show what shapes her little fairy was made of and she had some attentive participants trying to find the matching shapes !

The little fairy will feature in our next blog as well, so please stay tuned !

Pre-KG A balanced school life

 Pre-KG

A balanced school life

Life is all about balance and that is what we strive for at DSKI.

So the Pre-Kindergarten children are not only stimulated intellectually, they are also working on their gross motor and observation skills and increase their spatial awareness.

With many opportunities for active and outside play as well as discoveries in nature, the Pre-Kindergarten children learn to take risks, help their friends and face new challenges with growing confidence.
