Our body  / Spatial awareness

Spatial awareness is an important cognitive skill that is defined as knowing where your body is in space in relation to objects or other people.

It is the ability to understand and interact with the environment around you. Whether it be avoiding obstacles when walking, determining left from right, reaching out to grab a stem or putting an apple in the basket, these are all examples of tasks that require spatial awareness.

In Pre-Kindergarten the children learn many different skills and we provide an environment where the children can develop their spatial awareness.

The children are given freedom to explore either the outdoors or their classroom. They try different toys, they stack and connect, they build and construct with blocks and lego and make sense of their creations.

During P.E. and during our discovery walks, the children balance and climb, they play soccer and catch balls, they learn about distances, about far and near.

Look how well the children managed to pull out the tulip bulbs in the nearby field and place them in the bucket ! They worked together, had a lot of fun and also learnt a lot about changes in nature !

Further, while doing activities like cutting and pasting items in correct positions or while puzzling and playing memory cards, the children not only learn new vocabulary, but use their spatial intelligence as well.

This week the Pre-KG also had the opportunity to participate in several emergency drills where they could put in place all they had learnt about the procedures.

And again, spatial awareness was needed to navigate in the right direction and find your correct spot in line.

Were you aware what a very busy and interesting week the Pre-Kindergarten children had again?

Well, they did and they did an awesome job !

Your Pre-Kindergarten teacher, Anita Ursula Mönch
