The Very Hungry Caterpillar -

The Sequence and the Sequencing of the story

As mentioned in my last blog, the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” gives the children a lot of learning opportunities.

After reading the book several times, the children started to remember the colours, numbers, many of the food items and they also began to grasp the idea of metamorphosis.

They had a lot of questions and ideas and they were very interested in caterpillars and butterflies. We decided to create props ourselves, so the children could use them for sequencing the story and show their understanding.

True to the spirit of being an eco school, we used a lot of recycled materials!

THE EGG

The children said that we could use one of our play eggs from the Pre-KG kitchen, so that was good thinking!

THE TINY CATERPILLAR

After hatching, the caterpillar was very small.

Using playdough the children made many tiny caterpillars !

THE BIG CATERPILLAR

That tiny caterpillar ate a lot of food and became very big!

We looked at some of our recycled plastic capsules (which we also use for instruments etc.) and found out that they could be great bodies for our big caterpillars. The children were very concentrated when inserting pipe cleaners as antennae which was not an easy task !

THE COCOON

Old newspaper proved to be very useful for making the bodies of our cocoons. so the kids crunched some pages into balls and covered them with recycled wrapping paper! The result was astonishing and we had 2 nice cocoons!

THE BUTTERFLY

The children had painted some colourful butterflies the other day, so now they cut the shapes (some with help, some without) and backed them with museum advertisement pages to make them stronger.

Anita then showed them how to glue straws to the butterfly wings.  The children listened attentively and then all gave it a good try.

Everyone was thrilled how their butterflies turned out and we soon had a lot of butterflies flying in the classroom !

THE SEQUENCING

Now that we had all the necessary parts of the story and metamorphosis, the children tried to sequence the story with their handmade props.

They all worked together in a group and there was a lot of communication of what to put where.

Finally the children were happy with the sequence of the story !

Throughout all the activities the whole Pre-Kindergarten class was very interested, engaged well and showed that it is possible for even very young children to carry out a whole PROJECT by themselves !

Fantastic job, Pre-Kindergarten @ DSKI !
